After my mother died, my father gave me her wedding ring. My then fiance (now husband) and I wanted to combine her ring with the one he'd given me when he proposed, that belonged to his mother. We were told by a big-box jeweler that it was impossible and that my mom's ring was "too fragile" and the only way to do this would be to take the diamond out of its setting (which is art-deco and beautiful) and reset it. We found the Jewelry Mechanic who was able to keep the integrity of both rings and combined them in a way that is beautiful - I constantly get compliments on it. They appreciated the history of the ring and are true artists to boot. Plus, they have dogs greet you when you come in. That's just too awesome.
